Surrogacy

Surrogacy offers a safe and medically guided path to parenthood for women who are unable to carry a pregnancy themselves. Whether due to underlying health conditions, prior surgeries, or repeated IVF failures, surrogacy provides the opportunity to build a family using the intended parents’ own eggs or donor eggs.

What is Surrogacy?

Surrogacy is a form of Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART) in which a woman, called the gestational carrier (surrogate), carries and gives birth to a child on behalf of another person or couple, known as the intended parent(s). The embryo is created through In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) using the intended parents’ or donors’ gametes, and is then transferred into the surrogate’s uterus. There are two main types of surrogacy:

  • Gestational surrogacy, where the surrogate has no genetic link to the baby. The embryo is created using the eggs and sperm of the intended parents or donors.
  • Traditional surrogacy, where the surrogate’s own egg is used, making her genetically related to the child.

Only gestational surrogacy is legal in Georgia. This means the surrogate does not share any genetic connection with the baby she carries. Georgia offers a legal framework for surrogacy that simplifies the process of acquiring legal parentage for intended parents after birth of the child.

We agree with one of our intended parents who once said: “Surrogacy is a journey of shared hearts – where one woman’s compassion helps another’s dream of parenthood come true.”

At Reproart, every surrogacy journey is supported with expert care, legal transparency, and emotional guidance for both the surrogate and the intended parents.

When is Surrogacy Recommended?

Surrogacy may be recommended when carrying a pregnancy is not medically possible or safe. Common reasons include:

  • Absence of the uterus – congenital (born without a uterus e.g. Mayer-Rokitansky-Küster-Hauser syndrome) or after hysterectomy.
  • Uterine abnormalities – severe scarring, malformations, or medical conditions that prevent implantation or full-term pregnancy.
  • Serious health risks – heart disease, kidney disease, severe diabetes, or other conditions where pregnancy could endanger the woman’s life.
  • Repeated IVF failures – multiple unsuccessful embryo transfers despite good-quality embryos.
  • Recurrent pregnancy loss – repeated miscarriages with no correctable cause.
  • Previous pelvic or uterine surgery – when the uterus is no longer able to safely support a pregnancy.

Who is Legally Eligible for Surrogacy in Georgia?

According to Georgian legislation, surrogacy is available to:
  • Heterosexual couples who are either: legally married, or in a committed relationship of at least one year.
  • Couples with a documented medical need for surrogacy.
  • Importantly, foreign couples are fully eligible to enter a surrogacy agreement in Georgia, and many international patients choose Georgia for its legal clarity and supportive process.

Who are Surrogates?

Surrogates are healthy women who choose to help others experience the joy of parenthood. They are typically between 21 and 41 years old, are already mothers themselves, and have had at least one successful pregnancy and delivery.

Each surrogate undergoes a thorough selection process, including medical screening, to ensure that she is not only physically prepared for pregnancy, but also fully understands the emotional and legal aspects of the role.

Surrogacy at Reproart

Surrogacy is a coordinated process involving the intended parents, the surrogate, and the clinical team. Each step, from screening and evaluation to embryo transfer and pregnancy monitoring, is managed in a systematic, protocol-driven way to achieve the best possible outcome.

Surrogate Screening

Before starting treatment, the surrogate undergoes a thorough clinical evaluation. This includes ultrasound, hormonal testing, infectious disease screening, and general health checks. Readiness is also assessed to ensure she is fully prepared emotionally as well as physically .

While the tests may vary depending on the case, our screening protocols follow international guidelines and are customized by our medical team. These include:

  • Pelvic ultrasound
  • Pap smear and cervical screening
  • Hormonal testing (e.g., AMH, FSH, LH, estradiol)
  • Infectious disease screening (HIV, Hepatitis B/C, Syphilis, Rubella, CMV, and others)
  • General health checks (blood count, glucose, liver and kidney function)
  • Blood type and Rh factor
  • Thrombophilia testing if medically indicated
  • Lifestyle assessment

Preparation and Embryo Transfer

After the screening steps are complete, the surrogate begins endometrial preparation under the guidance of our reproductive endocrinologists.

The uterine lining is prepared using a carefully timed combination of medications to create optimal conditions for embryo implantation. Ultrasound monitoring helps assess the lining’s thickness, pattern, and readiness. The medical team adjusts treatment as needed and schedules the transfer at the most appropriate time.

The embryo created in advance through IVF using either the intended parents’ or donor gametes is then transferred into the surrogate’s uterus.

Embryo transfer is a minimally invasive and painless procedure, performed with ultrasound confirmation. After a short rest, the surrogate can return to her normal daily routine.

Pregnancy Monitoring

Approximately two weeks after the embryo transfer, a beta-hCG test is performed to confirm biochemical pregnancy. When positive, an early ultrasound at 6–7 weeks verifies fetal heartbeat and sac development.

From that point, Reproart oversees full pregnancy follow-up through regular imaging, lab assessments, and prenatal care.

The surrogate is supported clinically and emotionally throughout this phase.
