Sperm Donation

Sperm donation involves insemination using sperm obtained from a healthy donor. It is recommended in cases where the male partner cannot provide viable sperm, a male partner is not available, or when there is a risk that the male partner may transmit inherited genetic conditions or infectious diseases. Insemination may be performed by intrauterine insemination (IUI) or in vitro fertilization (IVF). The objective is that eggs will be fertilized by the inseminating sperm and that the resulting embryos will be able to lead to implantation and live birth of a healthy baby.. At Reproart, all donor sperm is obtained exclusively from certified international sperm banks. Donors are matched based on phenotype, education, blood group, and other characteristics. At Reproart, we do not used local donors (clinic policy).

Main Topics

When is Sperm Donation Recommended?

Sperm donation may be advised in the following cases:

  • Severe male infertility or azoospermia
  • Absence of a male partner (e.g., single women)
  • Failure to retrieve viable sperm surgically
  • When fertilization cannot be achieved, even using ICSI
  • Recurrent fertilization failure or chromosomal embryo abnormalities
  • Risk of transmitting serious genetic disorders or infectious disease

Who are Sperm Donors?

All sperm donors used by Reproart are healthy men aged 21 to 35, rigorously screened by international sperm banks. Screening includes genetic and psychological evaluations, infectious disease testing, and semen analysis. Donor sperm is held in cryostorage for at least six months and retested to confirm it is free of transmissible infections. The use of each donor is limited to reduce the risk of two genetically related individuals unknowingly attempting to procreate (), and resulting pregnancies are documented by the sperm bank.

Overview of the Process to Use Donor

1. Initial Consultation & Diagnostics

You will meet with a Reproductive Endocrinologist to assess your reproductive health and determine whether donor sperm is medically indicated. Tests to assess your reproductive capability may include hormone levels, ultrasound, AMH, infectious disease screening etc. Be prepared to discuss your desire to use donor sperm.

2. Sperm Donor Selection

Patients receive access to donor databases from Reproart’s international partner banks. Donors can be selected based on physical characteristics, education, ethnicity, blood group, and more. Our coordination team is available to assist with the selection process.

3. Sample Shipment & Storage

Reproart maintains a curated selection of approved donor sperm samples from international banks, available for immediate use. Samples are stored in liquid nitrogen and updated regularly. If a specific donor is chosen externally, the sample can be shipped under strict cryogenic transport protocols.

4. Treatment Cycle Depending on your diagnosis, donor sperm may be used for:

  • IUI (Intrauterine Insemination): sperm is inserted into the uterus near the time of ovulation.
  • IVF/ICSI: sperm is used to fertilize eggs in the lab. Embryo development is monitored and the best embryo(s) is(are) selected for transfer to the uterus.

5. Embryo Transfer & Pregnancy Testing

Embryo transfer is performed with ultrasound confirmation. A pregnancy test (beta-hCG) is taken 10–12 days after transfer. Any remaining embryos may be cryopreserved for future use.

Before Considering Donor Sperm: Explore Micro TESE

Before considering sperm donation, it’s important to know that in many cases, the male partner’s sperm— may still be usable, even after a diagnosis of azoospermia or previous failed retrieval attempts.

At Reproart, we offer Micro TESE (Microsurgical Testicular Sperm Extraction), a procedure that uses high-magnification surgical microscopy to locate and extract viable sperm directly from testicular tissue. This technique, introduced in Georgia exclusively at Reproart in 2023 offers success rates of obtaining sperm for 40–60% of the cases significantly higher than traditional methods of testicular biopsy — while minimizing reproductive tissue damage and preserving natural testosterone production.

For many couples, Micro TESE opens the door to achieving pregnancy using their own genetic material, without turning to donor sperm. We only recommend donor sperm if all available medical options, including Micro TESE, have been exhausted or are not medically appropriate. This decision is always made in consultation with the couple, based on clear medical evidence and mutual agreement.

Reproart has been at the forefront of male infertility care in Georgia since 2007, when we achieved the country’s first pregnancy using surgically retrieved sperm — a milestone that continues to guide our expertise today.

Legal and Ethical Considerations

Sperm donation is legally permitted in Georgia for both heterosexual couples and single women. All necessary documentation and informed consent forms are completed before treatment begins. Donors do not appear on the birth certificate and hold no legal, parental rights, or obligations toward the child.
