Safeguarding Surrogate Mothers
At Reproart, we are committed to the highest standards of care, respect, and protection for every surrogate mother. This is why we have built our approach on compassion, transparency, and a profound sense of responsibility. We ensure that every surrogate is fully informed, supported, and safeguarded throughout her journey.
Main Topics
Pre-Assessment Screening
Before joining our surrogacy program, each potential surrogate undergoes a full evaluation process to ensure she is ready – physically, mentally and emotionally – for the journey ahead. This includes:
- Full general health checkup
- Blood group and antibody screening
- Complete gynaecological examination
- Review of birth history (maximum of four previous births: maximum of four physiological births or maximum of two caesarean sections)
- Vaccination status review
- STI testing
- Dental checkup
- Mental health assessment
- Mental capacity assessment to ensure informed decision-making
- Social assessment to understand her support system and living environment
Informed Consent and Medical Autonomy
At Reproart, surrogates provide full, informed consent for all medical procedures. We ensure they understand their rights and are empowered to make decisions about their care at every stage.
Personalised Care at Every Step
- Single Embryo Transfer Policy: Only one embryo is transferred at a time (maximum of two in exceptional cases).
- Personalised Pregnancy Care Plan: tailored to each surrogate’s needs.
- 24/7 Personal Case Worker: Each surrogate is paired with a dedicated case worker who is available around the clock for guidance and support.
- 24/7 Safeguarding Line: Immediate assistance is always just a phone call away.
We achieve these goals through risk assessments, policy implementation, supplier due diligence, and raising awareness.
Emotional and Educational Support
- Counselling and Psychological Support: throughout the journey.
- Surrogacy-Specific Education: We provide continuous education to help surrogates understand the process, manage expectations, and feel confident in their role.
Birth and Beyond
- Collaborative Birth Plan: Developed together with the surrogate, intended parents, and medical team, the plan covers the place of birth, labour management, pain relief options, and birth support.
- Postnatal Care Plan: We continue to support the surrogate’s physical and emotional recovery after delivery. Special attention is given to her psychological well-being, and additional care is provided if needed.
Our experience shows that while the weeks following birth can be emotionally complex, surrogates generally report a positive experience and do not regret their decision. Many describe their journey as deeply meaningful and empowering.
Preventing Exploitation and Protecting Freedom
We take strong measures to prevent any form of exploitation, coercion, or deprivation of liberty, especially for foreign surrogates who may be more vulnerable due to language, legal, or financial barriers.
Our Safeguards Include:
- Voluntary Participation: Surrogacy is always a voluntary choice. Surrogates are free to withdraw from the process at any point before embryo transfer without penalty.
- Independent Legal Advice: All surrogates receive independent legal counsel in a language they understand, ensuring they are fully aware of their rights.
- Freedom of Movement: Surrogates are never confined or restricted in their movements. They live in their own homes or accommodations of their choosing.
- No Withholding of Documents: Surrogates retain full control of their personal identification and travel documents at all times.
- Regular Welfare Checks: Our safeguarding team conducts regular check-ins to ensure the surrogate’s well-being and freedom are respected.
- Cultural and Language Support: We provide interpreters and culturally sensitive support to ensure foreign surrogates feel safe, heard, and understood.
- Zero Tolerance for Exploitation: We have strict policies and monitoring in place to prevent any form of modern slavery, trafficking, or coercion.
Fair and Transparent Compensation
We believe that surrogates deserve to be fairly and respectfully compensated for their time, commitment, and the physical and emotional demands of the surrogacy process. Our compensation packages are:
- Transparent: Clearly outlined and agreed upon before any medical procedures begin
- Fair: Reflective of the surrogate’s role and responsibilities
- Ethical: Designed to ensure that compensation is never coercive or exploitative
- Inclusive: Covering all medical, legal, travel, and living expenses related to the surrogacy journey
We are proud to uphold ethical surrogacy practices that honour and protect the women who make parenthood possible for others.
